Migrating water birds mistake Wal-Mart parking lagoon for safe water; hundreds perish

It happened in Utah, and this article details the tragedy. This is, of course, another sordid example of what the paving over of nature has done.

  1. I heard about this incident and I must say that this has happened at least one other time in the same area.. I am sure there have been other incidents in that area that we haven’t heard of. I recall that this happened in the mid 1990’s. It was wet pavement they mistook for large pools of water.

That area has been almost completely paved over in the past twenty years. The Wal Mart parking lot may be located at a distribution center – many corporations have them in the St. George area. I was horrified the last few times I passed through there.

About five years ago there were a dozen or so grebes that landed in West Yellowstone, the town, and most were rescued by residents. I don’t recall what the weather condition was other than it was night and the spring melt was on. Most found large puddles which were okay to land in but were not long enough or deep enough for them to take flight again.

Sad when anthropomorphic encroachment/sprawl causes such an event.
