Monica and I visited the Mount Lemmon observatory near Tucson and light pollution was a big topic in the Qs-and-As session that evening. The proposal to dig a big open pit mine near the city poses a substantial risk for the kind of light pollution that badly diminishes the quality of night-sky viewing for astronomers.
