It’s called beech bark disease. This Associated Press story details what’s going on in Michigan, but the disease is also prevalent in Pennsylvania and elsewhere in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.

Yeah, I’m dreading this one’s arrival in our area. Between that and the hemlock woolly adelgid, our northern forest component will pretty much bite the dust.
