That’s what the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is calling its forthcoming enforcement blitz of regulations designed to keep motorboats from running roughshod over manatees.
From a Miami Herald story: ”’Operation Mermaid’ is an effort to enforce manatee speed zones in an attempt to reduce some of the deaths caused by boat collisions, which accounted for 86 of the 416 manatee deaths in 2006, state figures released Tuesday show.”
A manatee speed-zone ticket in Broward or Miami-Dade counties will cost a boater 65 bucks.
Is that a strong enough deterrent? Read the Herald’s article here.
