This is the view looking south over the crest of the Manzano Mountains in central New Mexico, with the Manzano Wilderness off to the right and the University of New Mexico’s Capilla Peak Observatory at top center. We found the sky over the nearly 10,000-foot summit exceedingly quiet while there in early November 2006, the fall hawk watch operated by Hawk Watch International just wrapping up at the time.
Mountain and western bluebirds were common in the pinon pine forest to the east. A brief description of the wilderness and a proposed 1,000-acre addition can be read here.

Looks like a great palce. I have always been a fan of New Mexico’s backcountry. It has a very unique ambience. Most of my experience there has been the Gila National Forest.

I’m anxious to return to this and other wild spots in N.M. The Gila is special, too.

It has been half a century since I rode some of that area on horseback. It appears I’ll never be back there now, but I still have some beautiful memories of it.
